Dodgy dealers have never made you look so good

Where Can I Find the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)?

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is composed of 17 characters (digits and capital letters) that act as a unique identifier for the vehicle. A VIN displays the car's unique features, specifications and manufacturer.

The VIN can be found in a couple of places including on the car's registration label (1), on the compliance plate in the engine bay (2) or on the passenger side windshield (3), or on one of the door posts (where the door latches when it is closed) (4). See the image below:

Look for the VIN in these other locations:

  • Insurance card/Insurance policy
  • Vehicle title and registration certificate

Recently A Current Affair (ACA) aired a story about odometer rollbacks (Used Car Warning). The story showed a dodgy dealer selling used vehicles with wound back odometers. Carhistory.com.au was approached by ACA to make a comment on this practice in Australia. David Scognamiglio, Head of CarHistory, provided comment on how CarHistory.com.au helps to identify this fraudulent behaviour. Our reports include odometer information alerting a buyer to potential wind backs.

As a Carhistory.com.au Dealer, you are able to proudly display the "Green Tick". By using the Green Tick and having a copy of the CarHistory Dealer Report on your used vehicles available you not only can give potential buyers a full history on a vehicle but confidence you are a reputable dealer.

Previous stories have included Today Tonight (Daylight Robberies Uncovered) and A Current Affair (Website solution for used car buyers) investigating dodgy cars being sold to unsuspecting customers. This is where CarHistory.com.au can help you, by providing a comprehensive report on the history of Australian used cars. We have even been referenced as a trusted way to find out what a car has really been up to by Today Tonight and A Current Affair.
